Table of Contents
HTML Code
HTML code is given below, in this code we have a textarea tag.
Id attribute is used to define id of textarea tag.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>jQuery Detect Enter Key Press in Textarea</title>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.5.1.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<textarea id="textarea" rows="5" cols="50">
</textarea>
</body>
</html>
JQuery Code
JQuery Code is given below, in this code jQuery id selector is used to select the textarea tag, then keypress() method is used to bind the keypress event with textarea tag. This will make sure that a function is always executed whenever a key is pressed inside textarea tag.
Inside this function keyCode Property is used to check which key is pressed. keyCode Property returns the Unicode key code of the key that has triggered the event.
Some browser might not support keyCode Property, that is why .which property is also used to make sure that the code works in all browsers. .which property also returns the key codes of the keyboard keys.
Note: 13 is key code of Enter key.
<script>
$('#textarea').keypress(function(event) {
var key = event.which || event.keyCode;
if(key == 13)
{
alert('Enter Key is Pressed!')
}
});
</script>
